Inside garbage bins come in all sizes, but outside use the garbage for the property.Melissa Wong/My Online Journalism Blog |

Since June 11, Phase One of the new automated garbage
collection programs has been put into its place.
Living in a world with rules
General rules are enforced to ensure the process is safe and effective for both homeowners and city workers. More than 99 per cent of the residents in phase one of the program is following the rules.
There are a few residents still not following the rules and
are overfilling the bins or else leaving excess garbage bags outside the bins.
The new bins can hold up to 4 garbage bags however if your household has more
than 4 garbage bags a week.
The rules are going to be enforced on July 3, 2018, and any
bins that are overfilled or extra garbage bags left outside the bins will not
be collected.
The automated garbage collection program has been introduced
to 33 per cent of the residents of St. John's. However, the bins were delivered
and for residents to use as early as May. Each household received a garbage bin
that has a serial number and is electronically tagged to be able to track the
bin to the assigned street address. Each bin is assigned to a street number and
remains with the house, not the property owner. There was a second bin provided
for that residence, for those homes with apartments.
Don't forget
Both blue bags for recycling and paper yard waste bags are
the exemption from the automated garbage collection rules and are not included
in the bins; they should be left outside the bins. These bags should be placed
at the curb and be at least 3 feet away from the garbage bin.
Phase One will be ending soon and phase two is starting in
2019.
